Chennai Super Kings started out on January 24th, 2008 and it’s been part of the IPL since the beginning. Fans follow their home matches at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. This ground is capable of fitting up to 38,200 spectators.

This team managed to qualify for 12 playoffs and play in 10 finals, which is the most amongst all IPL clubs. It also won the league on 5 separate occasions (2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023), the same as Mumbai Indians.

In the past 5 years, Chennai Super Kings had its ups and downs. During this period, it managed to win 2 IPL titles and failed to qualify for 3 playoffs. Before 2020, it managed to appear in every playoff, apart from the two suspended years.

In season 2020, the team ended up in 7th place accumulating 12 points and missing out on the playoffs. To make things worse, Mumbai Indians won the title that year increasing the difference between the teams by 2 trophies.

But, the Super Kings bounced back the following season as they managed to win their 4th IPL title. In the playoffs, they went up against Delhi Capitals in the quarter-finals and Kolkata Knight Riders in the final.

Things went back to worse for the club as it finished the 2022 season in the 9th position with just 8 points. The team managed to win only 4 out of the total 14 matches they played.

Chennai Super Kings once again found the right path as it won its record 5th IPL title in 2023. This time, it ended up in 2nd place during the group stage, trailing only behind Gujarat Titans. Interestingly, both teams met in the quarter-finals and final. As one can guess, the Super Kings won both matches.

Now, last season, the team missed out on the playoffs once more after ending the season in 5th spot. They had equal points as Royal Challengers Bengaluru, which ended in the 4th spot. But, the latter had a better net run rate and booked a place in the quarter-finals.

• Rachin Ravindra – This New Zealander plays as a slow left-arm orthodox bowler and left-handed batter. He joined the club last season, where he played 10 matches and made 222 runs.
• Sam Curran – A newly-acquired English left-handed all-rounder who bowls at a medium-fast pace. This is his second spell with the Super Kings as he was previously part of the winning squad in 2021.
• Anshul Kamboj – A new right-handed all-rounder who joined from Mumbai Indians. He will act as a backup as he lacks experience. But, hopefully, he’ll become a valuable member of the squad.
• Jamie Overton – This is yet another Englishman who is ready to appear in his first IPL season and show off his skills. He’s a right-handed all-rounder with a fast bowling ability.
• Deepak Hooda – A freshly signed right-handed all-rounder with an off-break bowling style. He won the 2016 IPL title with the Sunrisers and is looking for his second with the Super Kings.
• Vijay Shankar – This all-rounder returned to the team after leaving in 2015. He’s a right-handed batter and right-arm medium bowler who won titles with the Sunrisers and the Titans.
• Ramakrishna Ghosh – A 27-year-old all-rounder who is yet to make his IPL debut. He plays as a right-handed batter and a right-arm medium-fast bowler.

Bowlers

• Noor Ahmad – This is an Afghan spin bowler who just signed for the Super Kings after leaving the Titans. The club sees him as one of the future team leaders.

• Gurjapneet Singh – Yet another newly acquired left-arm medium-fast bowler. This one is yet to make his first IPL appearance, but he does play for Tamil Nadu in domestic cricket.

Chennai Super Kings Captain

For the 2023 IPL season, he completed a total of 590 runs, averaging 42.14. Additionally, with Maharashtra, he ended as runner-up in the 2018/19 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the 2022/23 Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Chennai Super Kings Rivals

This cricket club has two main rivals on the field. The first one is Mumbai Indians, which is a pretty obvious one. Both teams have equal IPL titles and hold the record for the most trophies.

As such, they are constantly competing for the leading spot and breaking another record. Both teams met in the IPL finals on 4 separate occasions. The Mumbai Indians managed to get 3 wins while the Super Kings settled with only one title.

They’ve also met 5 times in the playoffs where the Super Kings won 3 and lost 2 matches. In total, both clubs played 39 events against each other. The Super Kings got 18 wins while the Indians achieved 21 victories.

Another Chennai Super Kings fierce rival is the Royal Challenger Bengaluru. They call this rivalry the “Southern Derby” or the “Kaveri Derby”. The latter name comes from the Kaveri River and the water dispute between the teams’ states (Tamil Nadu and Karnataka).
