General IPL Information


The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a professional Twenty20 cricket league held annually in India. It features top players from around the world competing for franchise teams.

IPL stands for Indian Premier League. It is one of the most popular cricket leagues globally.

Each team gets 20 overs to bat in a match, making it a T20 format. The team with the highest score wins.

Playoffs determine the champion after the league stage. The top four teams compete in Qualifiers and Eliminators to reach the final.

An uncapped player is someone who has not represented their national team in any format of cricket. They often play in domestic leagues or junior levels.

The impact player is a tactical substitute allowed during a match. Teams can replace one player to adjust to changing game conditions.

Under this rule, teams can substitute one player at any point during a match, allowing for more flexibility in strategy.

IPL Auction and Team Selection


The IPL 2025 auction took place in November 2024 (24 and 25), in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Players are selected through an auction system where franchises bid for them. The teams base their choices on performance, role, and strategy.

Teams can typically retain up to 6 players in a mega auction. This includes a mix of capped, uncapped, and overseas players.

It is unclear if IPL 2025 will expand to 12 teams. The league currently has 10 teams, and any updates will depend on announcements by the BCCI

Team and Player Performance


Teams like Mumbai Indians (5 titles) and Chennai Super Kings (5 titles) are considered the best based on performance. It depends on personal preferences and metrics.

Statistically, teams like Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings have struggled to win the IPL title despite multiple attempts.

MS Dhoni is often considered the best captain for leading Chennai Super Kings to multiple titles and his exceptional leadership.

While opinions vary, some captains with poor winning records like David Miller (Punjab Kings) or others have faced criticism.

“Baap of IPL” is a term fans use for standout players or teams, often referring to players like MS Dhoni or teams like Mumbai Indians.

Virat Kohli is often called the “King of IPL” for his exceptional batting record and consistency with Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Team strength varies yearly, but consistent performers like Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings are always top contenders.

Records and Achievements


Virat Kohli holds the record for the most runs in IPL history, with over 8,000 runs.

Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings have won the most IPL titles, securing 5 championships (each team).

The highest individual score is 175* by Chris Gayle, and the highest team score is 287/3 by Sunrisers Hyderabad against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Manish Pandey was the first Indian to score an IPL century in 2009 while playing for the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Chris Gayle leads the list with the most sixes hit in IPL history.

Between 2014 and 2019:
– Virat Kohli dropped 15 catches, the highest in that period
Since 2021 (Wicketkeepers):
– MS Dhoni: 9 drops (78.6% catch efficiency)
– Sanju Samson: 8 drops (77.1% catch efficiency)

Lasith Malinga and Dwayne Bravo are among the best, with the highest wicket-taker records.

Rules and Gameplay


Teams can field a maximum of 8 out of 25 overseas players in their squad..

Retirement and Other Updates


As of now, MS Dhoni hasn’t announced retirement from IPL, but he is expected to make decisions based on fitness and team needs.
